THE GOTHIC LITERATURE

Corpse Bride is a great animation produced by Tim Burton who is an admirer of Edgar Allan Poe.

Pet Sematary, a film based on Stephen King's novel.

Hi everyone,
This week's topic is death (either premature death as Poe calls is or revival/coming back to life in a different form?). As you all know, Edgar Allan Poe started this romantic thriller movement and has influenced so many people from myriad of backgrounds: authors, directors, artists and musicians. (Stephen King, Tim Burton etc..)
Today, you actually see a lot of zombie films related to what Poe discussed two millennial ago.
I want you to post a 500 word long piece about death and the human interest in premature death.
Guiding questions: 1.How is Edgar Allan Poe's life related to the theme of death? (class notes)
2. Are there any cognitive aspects to it? (this question is a high level one,  it requires some research on human psychology- do not forget to add citation here!
2.Why has this theme mesmerized many people? Why has this theme never lost its popularity? (research)- Please include info about the videos, do some brief research on those people as well.
3. SHARING-TEACH US:What can you add to this post to teach us something about premature death? Please add an art piece, a video, a music piece, a short article etc. Make sure you give the name of the producer- citation!

Respond to two friend of yours!

  1. The theme of death has been popular for years in movies, books and music. Edgar Allen Poe, who was born 1809, was the father of death theme. His life was short, he died when he was 40 years old. Yet he saw lots of deaths in his life. His father died when he was two years old, after a year his mother passed away. He married with his 14 year old cousin. Edgar Allen Poe was 26 years old when he got married. His wife Virginia died because of tuberculosis. This is very early death for him like his father and mother. These deaths made him very sad and he had poor soul all his life. He always had drinking problem. His death was because of heavy drinking. He also had big money problems, so his life was really unhappy and his soul was never relaxed. In fact his last words were, “Lord, help my pour soul” He had a very sad life and his head was full of the theme of death. It affected his stories and his poems. At the same time he is questioned the afterlife. He became leader of gothic horror. Edgar Allen Poe was followed by many writers, directors, artists and song writers. Today people still admire him and his gothic style. For example, Tim Burton is an admirer of Edger Allen Poe. He made animated film called Corpse Bride in 2005. In this film there is a groom and a bride. The bride is dead but she rise from the grave. In this film we see afterlife like Edger Allen Poe’s theme. Steven King is also inspired by him. His novels we see same themes and elements. For example the movie Pet Sematary is based on his one of the novel. Death and graves are important in this plot. Steven King published Pet Sematary in 1983 and the movie was made in 1989. Around 30 years later the novel and the movie are still very popular. This shows that people are very curious and interested about death. Death is scary reality. Everybody will die, yet no one knows what will happen when they die. Therefore, death is very interesting and mysterious event. And it affects everybody. That is why the theme of death is very popular, and it will always be popular. In human psychology fear of deaths is an important issue. This is fear of unknown. People suppress this fear but they live with it. Freud was first psychologist who research about death deeply. He said nobody believes in his own death and every one of us is convinced of his own immortality ( www.deathreference.com). Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was the most famous composer of 18th century. His music is mostly lively and happy but in his last years he has melancholy in his life, he was afraid of death and he composed Requiem for himself. If you want to listen to his Requiem you can use click on this link: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5Kwf_nNmGI).

    1. Great reflection on how Poe's life is connected to his themes. Freud is right, feels like life will never end for us. Mozart is a great source... Isn't it interesting that he composed one of his best pieces right before he died?

  2. “When you suffer a loss so tremendous it’s like the sun goes down and never rises again. It sets and leaves you in a perpetual state of twighlight” (Wreck Me, Mac). We had to research about Poe this week. Previously we did the same for Dahl and there is one main reason why we did so: authors always leave some trails of their past life and especially their childhood in their works. Poe is no exception and I believe, after having read his biography it’s petty obvious why Poe mainly used death as a theme to his stories. Poe had to experience the deficency of a father figure because his father left the family when he was just a baby and as if that is not enough his mother died a year after the father abandoned the family. This must have been a very hard situation to handle with for a child at the age of three. Growing up without your parents must be very hard and no matter how desperately someone tries, he or she won’t be able to fill the gap created by such a tragic childhood. Secondly , the death of his beloved Virginia after a long phase of illness resulted in the conclusion that Poe went insane. Considering that his wifes love was an inspiration for him this is definately one of the reasons Poe most probably felt familiar with the topic death. So, in my point of view Poes’ life is related to the topic of death due to his experiences of his childhood and the death of his wife. Next, why are we so scared of the living dead? If we talk for zombies which are the most popular among these creatures, “[the] answer is pretty straightforward because [zombies] are walking corpses who feast on human flesh.”(Bloom, The Andrew Blog). The scientific name for this specific fear is Kinetomorphobia. Kinetomorphobia is explained by a theory which basically “states that when something looks almost, but not quite, human, our brains freak out and we get repulsed and scared by them.” (Down of the Undead, Jaymills). Besides, in my point of view there are two other main reasons why we are frightened of zombies “[t]he most obvious is that zombies make people think about death.”(Down of the Undead, Jaymills). Secondly, “Zombies are clearly diseased. A reason that people fear them so much could be an underlying fear of disease and germs, and death by those germs.”( Down of the Undead, Jaymills). What makes premature death scarier than a witch or vampire is explicable: a witch scares us but compared to zombies or similar we just fear a witches magical abilities which we don’t know. So we can classify witches into the category ‘fear of the unknown.’ We cannot categorize zombies in one particular category though. This is because of the three aspects mentioned previously: the fear of death, the fear of disease or even cannibalism and also the appearance of these creatures. In other words, while traditional monsters focus mainly on one of our fears, creatures like zombies scare people on a variety of their fears, which for me is the main reason why premature death is and will be a never aging topic among the horror genre. Additionally, some info about “The Corpse Bride.” As we can see in the trailer, this movie is about premature death, an aspect created by Poe. What is really interesting though, is not the fact that the movie has this theme but the director Tim Burton has many things in common with Poe. Tim Burton grew up near a cemetery and was somewhat acquaint to the idea of death starting from early ages. “Tim burton's movies [quote] Poe's "The Raven" many times.” (Bayley, Prezi). Tim Burton was actually influenced by someone he may feel similar to. I believe that the ‘Pet Sematary’ by Stephen King was put in to the blog for the same reason “The Corpse Bride” was. Not really because both examples deal with premature death but because Poe influenced both King and Burton who are just two of many… If you are fearing a Zombie Apocalypse here is the right Camp for you next summer. 1. Your ideas are in order, they're clear and easy to follow, and you have touched all the points you need with close to none writing error. I think you did a great job in here. But I think you could've talked a bit more about death than premature death. I never knew that there was a name for the fear of zombies as well as a camp that shows you how to escape an apocalypse. These days people tent to give names to a huge variety of things, so the name thing doesn't surprise me. Using the idea of zombies for fun seems clever since they're a big focus of interest. In short it's an examplery post in my opinion.

    2. A zombie camp? Oh my God! I'm still laughing! Amazing source... You cracked me up! Kinetomorphobia (just learned btw) is the fear of zombies. Connecting this type of fear with the camp? Edgar Allan Poe has become a more significant writer for me... He not only impacted new generation, contemporary art but also the reality itself!!!!

  3. You know the life of Edgar Allan Poe, He is the father of the horror stories and he helped the development of horror. When he was child, he was adopted by another family and when he grow up, he loved a girl and after her death his life changed a lot. Then his sanity turned bad. Also he died so early he was 40 years old and nobody knows the reason of his death. We can guess the reason beause he had problem with alcohol. It was like his girlfriend for him. He thinks that there is an another life after death and he was living in two different world. The one of them is real life, the second one which he imagine or think in his mind, controls everything. Also in his opinion, When a person is a child, he lives with the soul which makes him or her happy but when the person grew up , the soul leaves him. His style is example for the gothic style and he helped to develop gothic style and lots of writer and director use his style in their fictions and one of them is Steven Spielsberg. He is the writer of pet samatary.Behind a young family's home in Maine is a terrible secret that holds the power of life after death. When tragedy strikes, the threat of that power soon becomes undeniable. Every person knows that they will die and when you start to think that what will happen after you death. You don't know what you will feel. I wonder what will happen after i died. That's why the topic doesn't lose its popularity. I want to share a person who is the worst psycho in the world. In ancient time, In the caves archeologist find pictures on the wall of cave about premature death. The caves are Lascaux and Altamira. There are connections between islam culture and Life after death. In the past, People enter in the tomb with their special objects. The cause is that people believe the second life. And they put the tombs in a room and it helps to improve architecture. The premature death helps to develop architecture in the history and I want to recommend the song which yankı shared with us in his blogpost. The song is requiem which is written by Mozart. His rival wore black dress. It was like death angel. And he tricked mozart and told mozart that he will die coming soon. Then he started to be depressive. And he died because of his sanity.

  4. Death and premature death are themes that have become quite popular since Edgar Allan Poe. His works focuses on them a lot, and it's not much of a surprise as well. Poe's life had been a little harsh on himself. His mother died when he was really young and his young wife Virginia also died in an early age. He was especially haunted by the ghost of his wife. Affected by the deaths of his loved ones and his difficult life probably led him to write dreary and gothic works. It might also have caused him to use women as victims of death and show it in a beautiful way (1). However, that might not be all there is to it. Maybe Poe was fascinated about death as well. Along with his connections with death, he might have been intrigued by it, or afraid. He may be was in the fear of death. Since he was writing gothic and horror, it is possible that he used death to show or maybe understand the horror behind it. At least these are what some others and I think (2). There are different ways to view death, all related with the concepts we connect it with. For someone who lives a happy life, death can bring fear. For someone with a painful illness, it can be an escape. Likewise the death of someone we love will bring pain while the death of someone we hate or dislike might actually bring us satisfaction. For an example, in the Afro-Colombia culture women wear white instead of black in child funerals and the celebration is to show the dead that they're happy. In these ceremonies joy is normally the focus (3). While some old civilizations like Egypt believed there to be an afterlife, some cultures like Buddhism thinks of rebirth of humans. Death is an interesting topic indeed. People had been fascinated about it since the ancient times. It has been a big mystery and pulled the attention of lots of people. Even though our culture has become a death forbidden one, this theme is used in lots of jokes, literature work, films, news and media, entertainments, etc. Like trying to communicate with ghosts with séances and/or physics (4). In short, the dead are everywhere. From the cemetery a few streets ahead to our screens and from the museum of Egypt to the cinema we go everyday. But why are we so intrigued by it? Well, it's definitely not something that we can forget about. We become aware of this term in early ages and realize that we're going to die someday. Death is even a bigger unknown than the space and people tent to be fascinated about things they don't know, but it also scares them. That's why we had been trying to find an explanation for what's after this so called death and acting according to what we made up. We think that as we learn more about death we might be able to do something to prevent it. We think that this way our fear of death will lessen or diminish, as we understand it better, since as you know one of our biggest fears is the fear of the unknown. However, that's usually not the case. In some people's perspective, it's not the death that makes them uneasy; it's the things, people and the possibilities that they leave behind. Killing also is something that most of us would never attempt to do in real life. So some of our fascination with death and murder can be because it is a taboo in our society, like the forbidden apple (5). "What made them actually do it?" In short death is a sort of fear puzzle. Even though we're afraid of it, it still fascinates us so much that we can't let go of it. As death is an impossible end that makes premature death even a bigger source of interest and horror. As we had known death as the final destination which we can never avoid or come back from, the idea of cheating death and coming back to life both fascinates and scares us. It's something beyond us, and it can threaten us as well. This concept surfaces mostly in vampire and zombie stories.

    YanıtlaSil
    Yanıtlar
    1. But one of the reasons for our interest in it is because we kind of long for it as well. Some of us might see ourselves in these undead too; as they're spiritually dead and so are some of us in our perspective (6). These two themes had been effective on lot of artists, writers, filmmakers and such too. One of the most known ones is Tim Burton. He had been making dead people related movies for a while and his Corpse Bride is one of them. It's again about resurrection from death and that love can go beyond death itself. This plot is probably affected by the fact that he looks at death a little more optimistic (7). Another person that's worth mentioning is the author Stephen Kings. His book "Pet Semetery" was a huge success. It was about resurrecting the dead back from the afterlife, but in a changed and tainted way (8). These two people are just two of the millions that were affected by Poe. What I find interesting is that people are so affected by the concept of death that they created a whole study for it. It is named Thanatology after the Greek word "thanatos", meaning death. It mostly focuses on the social and psychological aspect of death and dying (9).

The connections made with the possibilities that are all related to scary things definitely point out the fear of unknown. Humans are very prone to fearing than embracing by nature. What the women did in that African tribe is just admirable. They see it a form of celebration and wear white.

  5. Edgar Allan Poe and death are very related to each other. Both of them remind each other; Poe mostly used the concept of “death” in his work. In my opininon, the concept of death also used Poe in the story of itself. Poe is known by the mysterious death which he ended his life with. He is founded in a delirious manner, then he died in the hospital of Washington, but all the reports are lost, so the reason of his death is unknown. There are many theories about his death; but no one knows which is true. It’s very interesting that he died very tragically like the stories he wrote. Maybe he also wrote his own story before he passed away, and made his own death mysterious by his own… Who knows? Also, after Poe’s wife died, he became an alcoholic and the struggle between his wife and death really effected Edgar. That’s why he used the theme of “death of young women” too much in his work. “Annabel Lee” is an example. When he said: “the death of a beautiful woman, is unquestionably the most poetical topic in the world” (Poe) probably he refered to his wife. The concept of death could be explained in different ways; Poe used the death as coming back to life in an unfamiliar position. But, why death and preamatue death make people scared…? Because no one knows what death theme truly means. The zombies are example for death material. They’re always liked and popular; they don’t lose their popularity. For example, the series of these days, “Walking Dead” is mysterious and getting very popular. Actually, the main idea which is shown by this series and Poe’s work is how humans react when their humanity is stripped from them. The zombies are just a metaphor, they’re used as cool effest of stories/TV shows. The people who come back to life after death throw up all the feelings they kept in themselves, this makes them feel the weakness, but they still seem horrible to the audience. Actually, it leads us to think, humans are very related to their souls. So, human psychology can’t stand being seperated from the life. But, why people are interested in watching those? Becuase they connect the death theme with their real life. No one is able to ask “Was it a good experience?”. So, people find the answers from the films/stories which include the premature death theme. Everyone knows death is inevitable and people need to question it, due to the questions in our mind, we’re afraid of the death. Stephen King and Tim Burton are the proffessionals who’re inspired and like using “death” and “dead” themes. In Burton’s animation, the bride is a dead, corpse bride. But she still has emotions. It’s normal that he used a corpse as a bride, because he says for graveyard; “…for me, there’s an energy to that is not creepy or dark. It has a positive sense to it.”(Burton). The Pet Sematary’s trailer shows us that not only dead people are scary, animals under the graveyard could be horrible too… Stephen King is called as “the king of the horror” in the trailer. I thinks it’s due to his different perspective. He sees horror films from a different point of view: “We make up horrors to help us cope with the real ones”(King). The premature death theme can’t lose it’s popularity because as we see it’s published very creativiliy and the connection people need to make between premature death and reality is endless…

    1. I can see tha you have used what we learned in class wonderfully. It was not hard to see the relation between Poe and death. You also successfully connected the ideas of premature death and death to how we humans think. Zombies are really popular these days. I think one of the reasons is the amount of gore involved. It makes our adrenaline go up and also makes us prideful to be able to stand it. The video was interesting, especially the idea that we get used to world trying to terminate us, that the world is full of threats. I think it was well done.

  6. Edgar Allan Poe is famous for his literature works in the horror genre. As we know, a piece of art can tell something about their creator. Knowing Edgar Allan Poe's biography, it is easy to understand the underlying reasons of the themes and styles of his works. Edgar Allan Poe witnessed the death of his father and mother. Poe fell in love with his young cousin Virginia and then they got married. Virginia was only thirteen when Edgar was twenty-seven. Many scholars suggest that Virginia and Edgar just lived together for the first three years of their marriage. What we know for sure that Edgar Allan Poe was very passionate and loving for Virginia, and when she suffered from an illness, Edgar got very sad. Virginia died at the age of twenty-five. That left a scar on Edgar's soul. This affected him too much and it actually became the reason he was successful at writing horror.
As ironic as it sounds, death is a big aspect of our life. Many people think about their death, and they think about what is going to happen to them after the death. People always thought about the life after death and many theories have been made up. The concepts of heaven and hell, reincarnation, no life are one of the most popular beliefs. We are scared of what is completely unknown. People tend to be like ''What if?''. ''When we see an image of a zombie or human-like monster such as Freddie Kruger, ‘normal processing mechanisms’ do not apply themselves, which causes the unsettling effect ‘when people want to like a near-human face, but realise something is wrong.’ The closer to human form a monster is, the more disturbing we find it and the more we fear it.'' (1) Researchers did an experiment, showing people different scary-looking robots. The more robots looked like human, the more scared were the people.
Zombies can not be compared with vampires or ghosts. There are no zombies in folk tales. We have never seen zombies (one can claim that we have never seen vampires and ghosts, but there are uncomplete evidences which let people decide the reality of these things). We don't know anything about zombies. It looks like as if we want zombies to be. People are very interested in zombies. What I noticed is that people tend to describe zombies as something more realistic than supernatural ghosts. Many movies about zombies are built on the idea that a virus turns people into zombies. The videos above tell us different stories similar in the topic of premature death. ‘’The Corpse Bride’’ is a good cartoon movie. While other movies are so concentrated on brain-eater zombies, She is something in-between a ghost and a zombie. The Corpse Bride movie prevents our minds to narrow about the zombie topic. I haven't watched the ‘’Pet Sematary’’ but I added it in the list of movies-to-watch. It is a rare movie showing non-human animal-zombies as far I as understood. Stephen King is very creative.

  7. Firstly, i want to mentione about what is the reason of people are afraid of death people. Many people are afraid of zombies and vampires because of movies and stories. Especially movies are very affective to people about scaring things. The reason of this is in movies events happen immediately no one knows what is going to happen. Also, i think that darkness is the most important thing in here because in the dark place no one can see what is going to come. In movies zombies and vampires are also more powerfull in dark. That is why many people do not prefer to do their job in the evening time because of this. Also there is an another important reason to darkness is zombies and vampires do not have stong in the day time because of sun. That is why a lot of people prefer sun time to evening time. I do not know why people are afraid of them because they are not real. In my opinion, the reason of this is people are uneducated. They believe everything that they see. I can say that a lot of people think that they are real. There is also thing that makes people to watch is they are unknown. Unknown thing always interesting especially to uneducated people. Uneducated people cannot know what is real or not. Someone needs to teach them. I think some people can also think that movies are real. Moreover, another thing that makes death people scaring for people is death things never have peace inside them also they always want to kill people. I do not know the reason but they cannot be calm they are always in attack. These reasons make them dangerous and interesting. They are unknown, angry and movies are very affective.

    1. Turan first I want to say that you mentioned a good point. But afraid of something is not always education. It usually the way how see things. Altough we know that some insects are not harmful, but most of us still afraid of them. Yet I belive that if you were able to clarify the idea you will have a better post
      Well Done.

    2. Turan, I disagree the idea of "I do not know why people are afraid of them because they are not real". Anyone didn't see the God, but they still believe and afraid of it. But in the general i like your work :)

    3. Turan I liked your ideas and it's true that uneducated people can be fooled easily, but I think that it's not only about the education level. 8. Edgar Allan Poe is a good writer we all agree, but he is different hic background is different what've he had past is hard for a little boy. His father abandoned the family and a year later his mother died. He is adopted after his family broke apart. İn time he finds a girl who changes his life. They got married but as we know everyone has an end. She died. He turns crazy. He comittited a suicide, because if whom you loved is dead you will they with them. He is the suffering one. He wants to be dead, this is not living. Premature death, or deaths generally are the themes, because maybe he wanted to write what he feels. He died with whom he loved died several times, but he comes back he had too live his real life. After a while he died with a mysterious death. There are lots of theoris about it. Still death themes are popular because everyone curious about what will happen next. We all know we wont come back as zombies, vampires or etc.., but it compensate us a while or makes us think deeper. Actually deaths are horror for us because there is a guestion mark that we cant learn behind it. İn horror mostly deaths are in a relation with religion. Mist of the people scare of religions. Tim Burton's and Stephan King's settings are inspire from Edgar Allan Poe. Trees, houses, themes especially premature death. Premature death is that we think he or she is dead but not. What İ said before maybe Edgar Allan Poe thinks he is dead too with his family and wife. Back to theme premature death is the biggest fear of human beings, because people dont expect someone to come back from death. This makes theme protect its popularity and still makes people scared. Premature death is something unexpected and unexpected is the ten elements of fear. Premature death is sci-fi İ know few films and books or TV shows. Classic The Vampire Diaries. For a writer Agatha Christie is the one of the best of the murdess. She is not writing premature death but she is writing about death. An example of premature death is Muerte Premature written and durected by Laura Sanchez Acosta watch film's trailer itself.

  9. If you are interested in books and films that are created in recent times, it is impossible not to see that “supernatural” and “unknown” things are popular as a topic of them. And the most remarkable one is “zombies” also the “walking dead” what is the popular name of this time. These creatures are in demand for many TV and book series at present. When we look at the history, the most appreciable ones are the stories that are written by “Edgar Allan Poe”. He can be accepted of origin of “mystery” and “premature death” stories. If he is called “The Father of horror stories”, it is certain that he has many children that was born from Poe (Tim Burton, Stephan King, Roald Dahl, Frank Darabont…). Do the writer and the scenarists create their productions by just using their dream World or are there any relation between these creations and their creators’ real life or their varied World? When we look at the Edgar Allan Poe’s life, he was born in Boston in 1809. It is known that his father abandoned his family while Poe was just a young boy and his mother died in Virginia. What a sad life story… For a little child it was one of the most terrible events that cannot be easy to overcome. He lived 40 years in his queer World and he lost a lot people that are important for him “Poe was overcome by grief after the death of his beloved Virginia in 1847. While he continued to work, he suffered from poor health and struggled financially” (Bio, Edgar Allan Poe). As we can understand from his life story Poe had a difficult and he was covered by death. So he always emphasized his complex life into his stories by using the duality of life and death, black and white, and also the gloomy settings also the “premature death”. The most popular question that is asked by many commentator is that “why people watch and read these gloomy stories even though they scare and scream? For instance the films of Tim Burton and the short stories of Edgar Allan Poe, When I first watch the Tim Burton film which is called “Caroline” and read the short story that is written by Edgar Allan Poe, I felt that there is a compulsion that fascinated me a lot. And I wanted to watch, read, learn lots of things about these. What I learned from a website, in human brain there is a part that controlles people fears when these emotions come as an order to brain, many hormones are excreted by brain, as a human being we don’t need just to be happy. We need curiosity and go deep inside of the unknown things. That’s why these film and books became popular in recent year. In my opinion these horror stories and films feed our curiosity about supernatural and unknown things. People always wonder that how people can re-born again after they died. This question inspires many writers to create stories that include zombies and vampires. These information gap keep the audience attention inside its mysterious. For this reason this premature death stories are popular at these moment. As is clear to see the question “what will happen after death?” is always make people suspicious and curious. Edgar Allan Poe’s stories have put the biggest stone to fill information hole about death. And it is understandable that his life was his guide and usher when he has been creating them. After him many films and books try to do the same thing for this reason these supernatural productions are in demand in recent year.

  10. Since Edgar Allan Poe was three, death has been included in his life. He lost his mother at that age and spent two days with her dead body in a room. It’s possible that this trauma affected his whole life and that’s how he became a successful writer on the theme ‘death’. The first bad life experience wasn’t the only thing which introduced him to the undeniable truth “death”. After a long time than his mother’s death, he lost his beloved wife. Surprisingly the death of his wife influenced his work and after many drinking binges Edgar Allan Poe had one last successful year producing works of literature. As a result it’s possible to say that his works were very much related with his life experiences. There are cognitive aspects to it. People are interested in watching these things for several reasons. The first one is that ‘it gave them a chance to purge their negative emotions- a process called catharsis’. This means that we use these violent stories and films to spend our negative emotions and get rid of them. Human psychology has a lot of things buried inside it self from the ancient times. The concepts ‘fear’ and ‘death’ was a big part of the human psychology back then because people lived in wild nature and the possibility of being hunted constantly caused fear and death. As people don’t have the fear of being hunted anymore, this feeling should be used somehow and that’s why we are interested in watching and reading things which make us feel this feelings. If we look from another perspective it’s possible to say that ‘these films are a product of curiosity and fascination’. We are interested in these things because they are fascinating and interesting in the way that they scare people. These movies and stories are written in such ways that they point out things which ‘exactly’ what human beings fear the most. As a result people get interested in it and want to produce more of these kind of works . This theme never loses it’s popularity because because it always improves. For example as Ms. D said “Ten years ago people were afraid of sharks in the movies but now they’re not.” Because they got use to it. To keep this concept going, people have to improve it so that it still remains interesting and awakens curiosity. When the word premature death is being said “Cromwell before the Coffin of Charles 1” comes to my mind. This is the portrait of prince Charles placed in his coffin. He was executed for his high treason at the age of 24. The portrait reflects gloominess and dolefulness. These are what what premature death makes a person feel so that’s why it reflects this idea very well. You can check it out by clicking this link: https://www.google.com.tr/search?q=Cromwell+before+the+Coffin+of+Charles+1&biw=1438&bih=719&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0CAYQ_AUoAWoVChMIlM2GyqDFyAIVSYUsCh3J_QTo&dpr=0.95#imgrc=2A6G8zGQ1HC6HM%3A.
People are afraid of dying but at the same time we’re afraid of not being able to die. The reason for that is we think that there is a limit of things that can be done, limit of places which can be gone etc. We’re afraid at the end we end up without anyone or anything. This is because human beings are social creatures who live with aims in life. Taking away their living purposes would be taking away everything and living without nothing is understandably scary.

  11. Most of the writers are influenced by events that occured in their life just like Edgar Allan Poe which we discussed his life in our class. Edgar Allan Poe, who lived in nineteenth century, was an important poet. With his works he overwhelmed many people and he still known in nowadays. He had a lot of difficulities in his childhood and that affected his all life and works. Because he lost his family his stories were mostly about death. As I researched about his works I realized that he uses the theme of beautiful women who is very cheerful dies in a scary way. Her wife Virginia was a very pretty woman but died in a very young age just like Poe's mother. So I believe he influenced by his mother's and wife's death in his life and writings. As I mentioned he was the most important writer which wrote about the theme death. He always choosed these kind of themes because with the deaths he saw in his life he became more earnest and attempt. Edgar Allan Poe died when he was forty, he died young. His cause of death is drinking heavily and the painful past he had. In fact one of the main causes of premature death is liver disease which includes the causes of heavily drinking. The disease gets slowly and most of the time people do not realize they have something wrong with their mentallity. Even though when they realized, it is too late for the to get up and stay strong. He did not only write about his relatives he also write about the situation he was living with conscious or not. Most of the time Tim Burtan's and Stephan King's movies and settings are source of inspiration from the father of death and premature death who is Edgar Allan Poe. Premature death is a depth topic. When person feels the depression inside it must be scary for them but after a while it might be something normal for them and they might be fearless toward death. Loneliness increases thr risk of premature death. Demand in addition I searched about the premature death of the rock stars. Some sources say that, rock stars are more than twice as likely to suffer a premature death as other people. Especially they are much more likely to die aftera few years of becoming famous. For example death of Kurt Cobain have been documented as including drugs or mental health problems. He was mentally in a melancholy so this occured his premature death for him.

  12. "The boundaries which divide Life from Death are at best shadowy and vague. Who shall say where the one ends, and where the other begins?" said one mad man as humans used to see him. This quote belongs to the creator of the detective stories and the inspiration for the zombie stories amd films, Edgar Allan Poe. Edgar Allan Poe uses the theme death in his stories or poems a lot, and one of the reason why he uses the theme death is he wasn't able to know his parents because his father left the family when he was a baby, and afterward his mother passed away when he was three. He was adapted by Mr. and Mrs. Allan who didn't support Edgar with money. He had a struggling boyhood without his parents and his family. An another reason why he uses the theme death is his beloved wife Virginia died because of tuberculosis. After her death Edgar went slightly insane, and he thought his wife will comeback to life that's why most of his stories and poems are based on afterlife. We all have thanatophobia, which is fear of death, in our subconscious. There are many events that we cannot explain or solve on the earth, and one of them is death. People scare from the unknown, and death is one of the things that we can't explain. Being scared by the living dead like zombies or vampires is another level of being scared by the unknown. In religion if a person can't die or she comes back to life or her spirit can't leave the earth means that person has some unfinished business in our world, but in science, scientists claims that we fear of the living dead because they are no longer humans and we cannot guess what are they going to do or what are we will happen to us if we die. The theme premature death is still popular because we still are not able to figure out what will happen to us when we die.
Edgar Allan Poe is still a inspiration for writers and directors. Tim Burton is one of them who inspired by Edgar. In Tim Burton's animations or stories it is easy to recognize the similarities between Edgar's and his works. One of the similarity is a woman who comes back to life, and one of the other similarity is the struggle of a child with his parents. As we see in the trailer of the Corpse Bride which is animated by Tim Burton there is a woman who comes back to life, and there is a kid who falls in love with the Corpse Bride, and he has some difficult times with his parents. An other person that Edgar influenced is Stephen King who has also an obsession to death, horror and murder. Steldhen uses similar symbols to Poe like cat, dog, dreary trees, and he also uses the same dark and gloomy setting in his writings. The movie "Pet Sematary" is based on Stephen King's book, and it is obvious that he uses the theme death like Edgar did.
The first zombie film was made in 1932.

  13. Edgar Allan Poe’s life is related to his theme of death in the way he his life is changed by death completely. Somebody who lost someone they care about will affect their psychology in the way they have a big place on that person’s life and make a big space when they leave. So Edgar Allan Poe loses his mother died in his childhood and his father left him which is the reason he was taken care of another family. Also the woman he married died too. ‘’In 1835, Poe, then 26, married his 13-year-old cousin, Virginia Clemm. They were married for eleven years until her early death, which may have inspired some of his writing’’(Wikipedia). So as it’s seen on Wikipedia, she died and that made him crazy which is the reason he started looking at life and death of a person from different perspectives. Edgar Allan Poe thought that people had another life after death as some other people did, but his thinking was a little different than what was written on holy books. He used a different style in his stories that people awake after they die, and be in a very scary form which was the first form the movies like, ‘’Resident Evil’’ or ‘’World War Z.’’ He also reflected the discussions he had with his step father to his writings because he wasn’t getting on well with him. So now, a lot of people work on horror films, everybody watches horror movies, and some horror movies make great money, but why? Because the theme of death is in the movies just like any other writing of Edgar Allan Poe. So what makes the theme of death so important? Why can’t we stop thinking about it? There is a theory about death that ‘‘ the awareness of our own inevitable death creates the potential for debilitating terror, against which we then find ways to psychologically defend ourselves’’(Pillemer). So the reason we are so afraid of death is we are aware of our death and we know we can’t get rid of it. In addition, we aren’t even sure what will happen after death(are we going to go to hell, or turn into zombie, or nothing?) which makes it interesting and scary. Human tend to interest in the things that scare them, this is in our nature, but there is a weird irony about human nature as well. We defend ourselves by fearing something (for example if I hadn’t feared death before, I would have jumped out of the window and died) we are interested in that because it scares us. So we are defending to something by fear which we are interested in at the same time. That is one of the most important reasons why death mesmerizes us so much, never loses its popularity. Death is the only thing that can scare and make someone curious. A video I watched about why we shouldn’t be afraid about premature death really works that I am not afraid of death too much anymore. You can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XYsn7LVEAI Additionally, I have a video about why we fear things other than death. You might want to check it out. It’s explained very well. 14. Edgar Allan Poe is the creator of horror and its products like movies or books which have a great influence on today’s generation. He creates a different and unredeemed world in his stories and as you read them, you start to imagine the setting of the story which makes you to question reality and concreteness. By searching about Edgar Allan Poe’s life, it is certain that he was absolutely affected by his wife’s sickness and her death. He thought that his wife would come back to life again. That is why he is cracked and the main reason of his works’ impression being very effective is coming from his insanity. Also, his death is even more mysterious than himself. A person found him unconsciously laying on a street wearing somebody else’s clothes and takes him to a hospital. He died there a few days later and nobody was able to learn what exactly happened to him. His last words were “Lord help my poor soul!” According to his last words and his concept of “premature death”, it seems like his unlucky life reflects on his works. Premature death is the idea of not dying. Actually, when a person dies, their soul does not leave earth and stays here according to premature death. The result is coming back to life again. That what makes it so scary. You die and you go some other place where nobody is able to see it on Earth, yet your soul stays here and you come back to life with a wicked and excruciating soul. It is also interesting that people who believe the concept of “premature death” are totally afraid of it (http://www.minerva.mic.ul.ie/vol11/Premature.pdf). As we see in Poe’s last words, he begs “God” to cure his ruined soul. Also, I think that using “premature death” in a movie or book makes it more scary bacuse it is the fear of the “unnatural”. For example, zombies are the besic examples of it. I am pretty much scared if I see a zombie on a movie because I started to think that all evil forces will return to Earth and destroy what is good. It is like the person or the zombie that gets out of their tomb will bring this unnaturality into our world and let it turn into hell. Also, assume that Einstein comes out of his tomb (don’t forget that his body was burned when he died) and starts to walk around. Isn’t it insane that having Einstein walking around and speaking in a language that nobody cannot figure out? I mean the idea is totally creative and related to the elements of horror and that is why Poe is the father of horror. It never looses its popularity because people can create many kinds of unnatural beings having different features. It is popular because there are no boundaries to illustrate something to scare people. It is 100% successful. I found a picture about premature death which is a symbol of it. Whenever I watch a movie, a hand of a zombie suddenly shows up on the screen that totally freaks me out. I believe that the hand is a way of calling help. I have always been thinking that somebody should help these zombies that are taken by dark powers. That is why we usually see their hands coming out of their tombs in the first place. Later on, their body shows up and I start to think that nobody can help it in this world. In other words, it is a way to call help but no help could help it. 15. This week we read a short story by Edgar Allen Poe along with learning more and more about horror and some elements of it. Throughout the first week we made an introduction to horror and what it means. Also we read a short horror story from Roald Dahl but this week we are reading a whole different story from the one and only talented writer Edgar Allen Poe. His work has inspired and influenced many many artist, musicians, and even 21st century Hollywood directors and producers. His vocabulary of defining an environment or a person is just breathtaking. And of couse like many other writers his envirorement affected him tremendously. First of all he lost his mother at a very early age and he never got the support he needed from his guardian parents. He had to find a job, get money and he basically had to make a living. So it is clear that he have been through a though stage. And after his beloved wife passed away, horror became the real deal for him. Especially when he was terrified by his wife’s ghost. He was haunted and melancholic, in a deep depression. You can learn more about him by the given site I am basically just going to recommend this to you(http://www.enotes.com/topics/edgar-allan-poe.) my dear classmates The readers can see darkness through his eyes. He focused on also one of my biggest fears…death. Whether its you or someone special to you. For example in the short story he wrote and we’re reading in Ms. D’s class he wrote a horror story which has the element of death and coming back to life in it. Which as I mentioned before made a huge impact to the world. This is why we still have zombie films like “world war z”, “walking death”, “warm bodies”, “Maggie”, “the corpse bride” and many more. Games like “the last of us”, “plants vs zombies” and many more and people are still not bored with this theme. Which is coming back to life. But my question is why. Why do people still use these same elements over and over again. My answer is one word only… because its timeless. Furthermore there is a very meaningful answer as well. You see, coming back to life from death is pure horror and the reason why Edgar Allen Poe found the idea, which influenced people still to these days, is that he wanted to bring his loved ones back. So he found a creative way of doing that which built the first stones for anything that is related to horror. And the reason why it has not lost its popularity is because its both something to be afraid of and also something to be fascinated about. Its scary for us and it drives people crazy to think that there are ghosts, zombies who came back to life from death. Which is already a fear of many people so in a way coming back to life must make some people excited. To think that it won’t end and theres still a story to continue but unfortunately as far as we know its not possible. Because it mesmerized many people there are movies, paintings, songs all over the place! One of the directors who was a big fan of Edgar Allen Poe is Tim Burton. He has made gothic films for viewers all around the world. One of them is “The Corpse Bride” . It is from my perspective completely a lookalike with “ The story of the house of the Usher”. I mean Victor’s and all of the other town peoples physical appereance looks like Edgar Allen Poe wrote a descriptive essay to the characters. The story has a melanchollic feeling in the alive world but for some reason all the dead characters are colorful, funny and lively. So its kind of ironic to me. So Victor accidentally marries a corpse bride when he was supposed to marry another girl. I don’t want to spoil anything because I already watched the movie but let’s just say the ending makes me smile. Also check out another movie by Tim Burton called “Frankenweenie” its about premature death as well but this time it’s a dog. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBfcGLBJ2Uc

He is the father of detective stories and horror stories. His major themes are death and being psycho in his work. Of course like every writer, that themes are related to his life. Death is almost everywhere of his life. When he was 6 he was afraid of death. A normal 6 years old wouldn’t even know what death is. Yet he knows it by his mother. His mother passed away when he was a little child. Maybe all his problems come from his childhood because of his mother. The most tragic moment for him was his wife’s death. He lost his mind as he lost his wife. After her death, he thought he was dying every each day. Maybe this is an explanation of his death. He died at October 7, 1849, at the age of 40. The cause of death was disputed. When he was found at streets of Baltimore, he was delirious in need of immediate assistance. He came to himself but that time was not enough to make him talk because he died immediately. So he wasn’t coherent enough to talk about how he came to this condition.
He is living in two different worlds. One of them is his real life and his imagination life. I think this comes from his two different fears. One of them is fear of death which is related to her mother. As I told before, his mother gave him this fear. When she died, he was afraid of death because he thought he did not live enough. So he got this fear and it is related to his real world. The other fear of his is fear of not dying. What I mean by not dying is your soul is remains in this world as guilty. That is what he afraid of. It comes from his wife. When she died, he was depressed and didn’t know what to do. So he changed his life and the thing afraid most. Before his wife’s death he was afraid of dying, after she passed away he was afraid of not dying. His body wanted to die but his soul did not let him go. This is his imagination life. He knew that he was guilt in this world and he was so afraid that he will be still guilt when he dies. I just explained how his worlds are separate and why they are separate.
On the other hand, the theme death mesmerized many people. The underlying reason of this is death is something that a living thing can never explain. So we will never learn what will happen after we die. In a lot of stories, the authors use people one major fear, death. People fear because there is nothing they know about it. We all know just one thing. If you don’t breathe in this world for once, then you won’t be able to do it again. People around you will lose you. That is one of the simplest explanation of why people mesmerized by death.
Edgar Allan Poe’s life has changed after two deaths which I told before. http://www.thewomenwholovedpoe.com/thewomen.html
This link contains both his mother and his wife’s information and their pictures. I think premature death about Edgar is related to these women. The way he acts and writes shows us how desperate was he when they died. So Edgar’s life and the theme death are all about the people he has lost.

    1. İhsan,
I totally agree with you!! You explained us that Poe's social and career lives are affected by his mother's and wife's deaths. I think that comment is totally correct. Because people learn every important thing from the ones who are really close to them. He created stories related to "premature death" because what he learnt from his life is based on death. That is why I found your comment successful and inspring. Thank you for your post :)

  18. Death is a theme which is popular in the human life. All people use this theme in their movie, stories. Edger Allan Poe who is the papa of the death theme. He is the father of his theme because he use this theme in his stories firstly and he become a pro on this theme. The reason why he wrote about this theme is hidden in his life. When he was two, his father death. After his father death his mother also dead in two or three years later. Then he married with his cousin but his wife also death because of phthisis. From those early death his life gets upside down. He lost his everything in his life. Also John Allan adopted him. Also Edger Alan Poe had some serious problem whit his father. Furthermore he had a mysterious death. No one now how he death. Briefly death affect him so deeply. Because of all these problem he wrote about death in is all stories also theme death is not become old. In today's it is same. Writers wrote about death because death is something that we cannot control. People also do not have any idea about what's happening after death. There are some examples in the history too. There was a king who use heaven to control people. It means that there is a unknown part about death. Also when writer writes about death that can be happen people start to think about is it going to happen to them too or not. So people get scared from that theme. Tim Burton and Edger Allan Poe wrote about death. Tim Burton movies quote from Edger Allan Poe. Edger Allan Poe often wrote about a young, beautiful woman who has died and in some way comes back to life but Tim Burton wrote about same thing but a straight wait. Tim Burton who is writer of the Corpse Bride. In that film, director use revived in his film. Those two people use revived and death in their products. Voodoo wizards use frogs to do a zombie virus. When frogs are scared they excrete some liquid from their skin they take that liquid and mix with other thing. They say this is the zombie virus. If someone drink it or if it is come to wound it cause bad damage to the person. After the person drink that virus and if the person die that person turns to zombie

    2. Rifat, when I look at all the things you wrote briefly I can say that your ideas are really good. I like the way that you explained the similarity between the theme "death" and Edgar Allan Poe's life in a detailed way. I aslo think that the idea which is " people write about death becuase they can't control it " is very cool. My opinion is that people write about death cause it's interseting and 'uncontrolable' things as you said often interest peope. So some of our ideas are somehow similar. But I wish you could explain your ideas more about question 2&3. And I also wanted to see a link where I could find the stories that you have mentioned. Except these overall I think you did a nice job.

  19. “The reason I talk to myself is because I’m the only one whose answers I accept.” ― (George Carlin). Almost every author use things from their life. The reason why they do that is very simple because; every person has a different perspective of life. Also the things every person once experienced is different then a another. Each and every lesson which we learn from life can be interpreted diffrently. If we look for a person that fits in to this description, the person we are looking for must be Edgar Allen Poe. In his life he had a really hard time and this affected the perspective in his stories. If we look at succesfull people, we almost see that they experienced a bad childhood or raised in a bad environment. For some poeple raising in those environments can be better for a person, therefore people can ask more questions to life and be able to identify the life more. This is what happened to Poe. He raisd in bad conditions and he became alcoholic. He lost his wife and parents. Life suffered him but all those things affected his style. He created a new style and a new type of feeling in stories. If we talk about his style, it is enormous, becausue he used a new genre. He descriebed things in differnet way. If we identify his stories we can see that he describes everything in two ways. This type of writing makes readers more nervous and frightened. If humans can not find the answer of something excatly, this question or event can turn into a fear. One of thing we always fear is the unknown. Also its same for religion. We don’t know who is god, we don’t its shape, therefore we can use religion as an flexible object. For example if we don’t have enogh information about religion, people can belive the idea which is proved strongly. If somone says ghosts are real and describe them like a monster, probably most people will belive that and will be afraid of that thing maybe even its not real. Also he used death a lot in his stories. The cause of death is generally unusual and different. There is a direct connection to Poe’s life in this theme. Again, this is going back to the note that he loved his foster mother and wife dearly, and they passed on before him. Virginia, Poe’s wife, was very pretty and died at a young age, just like the characters in many of Poe’s stories. In someway he uses death as an another symbol. For me he uses it to realize people that life is for us to live. He uses it to say that life is short. From his life we see lots of problems and because of those problems he was not having a good life maybe not but, he wants us to know that, don’t sacrifice your life for someones life. If you want something more life is not for to scare from things, its for to enjoy and to be happy. For that reason i will put a song which is made by Ludwig Van Beethoven: Odd to Joy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kcOpyM9cBg

Poe's different style due to the fact that peoples experiences differ from each other was something I didn't think of. It just amazed me. You answered all questions in general. The only thing that could have made your post better would be if you state your ideas more clearly, especially the part where you connect to god. Nice work, enjoyed to read it. Thanks for your efforts.

  20. In these two weeks, we learnt the father of the horror. Whom is Edgar Allan Poe. We searched his life and in the classroom we make brainstroming with our friends . He had a short and tragedic life that makes him legend ı think. He was born 1809 in boston. He start to loose his family very early His father abondoned his family when he was two years old, after a year his mother passed away. When his parent died, he was adopted by another family and when he grow up, he loved a girl and one day his love was died and her death changes his life. He died so early he was 40 years old and nobody knows the reason of his death. We can guess the reason beause he had problem with alcohol. It was like his girlfriend for him.Edgar Allan Poe's life related to the theme of death in the way that death. The important thing is when the readers reading his works, they see Edgar Allan Poe’s life that proves the thing authors always leave some trails of their past life and especially their childhood in their works. He lose his family when he just a baby and it affects him very deeply. Maybe the main reason of using the theme of death in his works. Edgar Allan Poe believed and lived in two different world. One of is the real world, and the second one is which he created and imagined in his mind that’s why he was different. He also believed that, when a person is a child, he lives with the soul which makes him happy and brisk but when the person grew up , the soul leaves him. His style is very good example of the themes gothic,Dark and Fear. Many writer followed his style and used their works. He always used life after in his works. Like Corpse Bride is a great animation produced by Tim Burton who is an admirer of Edgar Allan Poe. In the animation the setting creates perfect horror story atmosphere. and the main thing is the girl rises from the tomb. People always scares the unkonw like death but they also wonder it. Today lot’s of people interest the death because they don’t know what will happen when they die ,and that makes the theme death very popular and that’s why the topic doesn't lose its popularity. Premature death means you’re a walking dead your soul never be free and comfort. Do You Believe In Ghosts? Sarah Winchester’s husband create a gun and killed some redskin people and their souls comes inside their house and goes to medium and medium says her you build you home until you die and she did it everyday she built her house for escaping the ghosts. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winchester_Mystery_House / http://www.winchestermysteryhouse.com/allegedhauntings.cfm

  22. Sorry for posting this for the 3rd time but i saw mistakes so I wanted to correct them.
Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston on January 19,1809. He has grown without his mother because she died when he was 2 years old and his father left him. He was adopted by a family , Mrs and Mr John Allan. John Allan was a succesfull merchant and a rich man. During Edgar’s childhood he helped him get a good education in good surroundings but later in Edgar’s university life he did not provide him the money he needed for his school. After his father’s attitude he quitted the school and became an alcoholic. He was all alone by himself, he had no money and no friends. He got married with his cousin. His wife died of tuberculosis. These events effected his psychology in a bad way and because of his distant relationship with his father he also wrote the conflicts between them in his stories. I think these are the underlying reasons why he became a horror writer. Poe died in Baltimore; the cause of his death is unknown but probably connected with alcohol. He had lived a hard life full of sadness and his life is full of events that made scars on him.
The theme of death never loses its popularity because people are curious about what death really feels like, how much will they live, is there an after life that this world is not the only place we will live in , how will they die and those kind of things. Tim Burton is a man who uses Gothic style as just as Edgar Allan Poe. They both write creepy stories, they use the theme “death” a lot. Tim burton's movies quotes Poe's "The Raven" many times. As we see in the Corpse Bride a man marries with a woman who just rises from the grave which was dead but then back to life. Corpse Bride is about tortured romance and erotic obsession that evokes Poe. Also Stephen King who wrote the “Pet Semetary” is also an example who read Edgar Allan Poe stories and got inspiration and instructions from him . It is an horror story where animals and people become alive again by rising from the grave like the bride in Tim Burton’s film. The subjects they picked show us that they are interested in the theme of death.
From looking at the informations and statistics we can say that the five big reasons of premature death is cancer, heart disease, stroke, respiratory disease and liver disease. We also know that our bad habits like smoking, drinking too much alcohol, poor diet, lack of physical activity and being overweight directly cause premature death. Here is the proof of these information that I have given.

  23. Edgar Allan Poe had lost some of his relatives throughout his life. Even though his father had not been dead while he was a newborn, his action of leaving his son was an impact in Edgar Allan Poe’s life. After his mother’s death, Poe was an orphan and he did not have anywhere to go. The other important incident that influenced Poe’s theme was his wife’s death. After her, Edgar Allan Poe was lost and had started seeing his wife as a continuing hallucinate. It made his works even darker than before. Therefore, these unfortunate events made him an unforgettable author. While giving the theme of death, Poe also mentioned mental disorders such as schizophrenia. He believed that the soul and the body start to get apart at the end of puberty. He showed his beliefs in his works like the Fall of the House of Usher. The narrator cannot give us the answer of whether he tells the story or the story had written with third person. Throughout the story, the narrator contrast with his thoughts also. The fear of afterlife comes from the fear of unknown. We had someone with us while learning how to eat, how to talk, how to walk, how to write and even how to ride a bike, but that’s not going to happen when we die. We will be alone and there will be no one to ask what we will do, what things are prohibited, which one is the best wat to behave or even if we will do anything at all. We don’t know what we can get face to face with, that is the reason of the fear of unknown. We will have to learn by ourselves. Besides the fear of afterlife, we prepared ourselves with the idea of dying someday, but what if we return from death? It is something we only see in horror movies. Returning from death is a supernatural thing that makes people tremble. People expect to rest in peace after death, and never consider going to the other side with an uneasy feeling. It is always a bad sign to return from death, because it is a symbol for unfinished businesses, and these unfinished businesses are always end up with someone’s getting hurt. What if we turn to someone who hurts? Death is part of a nature and returning from it should have effects such as losing humanity. Humanity sometimes keeps people from doing dangerous things and in horror stories we see something that lost its humanity. We scared of returning someone who we did not used to be. Our appearance does not show who we are. It can change from time to time, but the thing that separates us from others’ is our personality. If we loose it, then it means we are not the one who we were normally, and that’s the time when we loose completely. Edgar Allan Poe had not just influenced people with the concept of horror. Arthur Conan Doyle had influenced by Edgar while writing detective stories. “Conan Doyle once said that Edgar Allan Poe’s stories were a model for all time.” There are some accusations about Conan Doyle stealing 7 ideas from Edgar Allan. Even there are ten to twenty years between the two authors, some people think Sherlock Holmes is a copy of C. Auguste Dupin. Both Sherlock and Dupin are counseling detectives who work when the weather is vague “and sometimes contrast with the local constabulary.” There is also similarity between the addresses such as specifying it. It is usually uncommon to give the direct address in literature but in both works the address had given fully.

  24. One of Edgar Allan Poe’s major themes he prefers to use is death. He has a no idea about his parent because his father left the family and his mother passed away when he was only three years old. He had grown up with another family that is the family of Poe. He was married with his cousin who is Virgina Clemm Poe, but Edgar Allan lost his wife when she was 25 years old. She was ill for 5 years with a lot of pain. Before they burned Virgina, Edgar didn’t want to see her as a reason of remember her alive. Also, he did a portrait of Virgina in watercolor to keep his memories alive because he didn’t have any image of her. Those deaths made Edgar Allan to think and writes about the theme of death and after life. For example, “The Raven”, he writes about love, loss and madness with supernatural atmosphere.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywvp2XVS6i0 .Also, in the past, children had died in early ages in America and it reflects to the literature. In the literature, themes were based on mortality, children-parent relationship. Therefore, it become gothic romances, graveyard poems and stories in a different forms like first point of view, illnesses, experiences of death, zombies. After life and death theme never loses it interest. People always scared of after life and there are lots of underneath reasons. One of them is related with the religion and well living. If someone lives in a great life with the obeying of their religion’s book and rules, they are not scared of after life because they thing they are going to a great place. But if they didn’t obey the every rule they are afraid of the after life because they think they get a punishment for forever. Also, endlessness affects on after life because there are two options that religion books said: Heaven and Hell. The worst one has a common element of horror: fear of unknown. Anyone doesn’t know what will happen after he or she dies and it scares but people has some ideas related with literature and religion about after life. In the literature, death and after life theme is using in the fictions. For instance: zombies. One if the popular zombie fiction example is Frankenstein. This story was written by Mary Shelly when she was just 16. It becomes really popular because it makes us questioning about biological possibilities and creator of life. Frankenstein was formed by dead bodies and came through the life with electrical devices. It makes people think about being God is a something good, but the result is different, it has become monster thus it made the idea of zombie had changed into something bad. In now time some of the universities have a plan of zombie apocalypse simulations and tips like Cornell, University of Florida and Bristol universities to protect human being from zombie apocalypse. It displays that idea of zombie doesn’t just stays in fictions, it affects our lives and fears. The fear of zombies named is “kinemortophia”. “Kine” is come from Greek and it means “to move”, “mort” means dead in Latin and “phobia” means fear. If we put all these word together it means walking death, which is one of the famous TV series.

  26. First of all, Ece i am sorry for stealing this from you but i was going to stay on same topic also. These events created a real monster. Edgar Allan Poe. He, the master of horror, influenced and affected all of us in every part of the horroric theme. For example, haunted houses, crazy people and etc. Poe, was such a great writer that he had a different point of view that people couldn’t think about. He suffered so much that he closed to his inside, created a world of itself which he lived in there and did not only change himself, also changed us. He created romantic thriller. He was so successful and insane that he also created the fundemental today’s horror. Works he did in 1900-20’s still valid in our world. One of the main reason that he maintained this much is that he always pointed out the weakest point of human nature:Fear. Fear coils in your stomach and clutches at your heart. It’s an irritating emotion that we generally try to avoid. Yet across the world and time, people have designed stories/movies to scare them. Writers like Edgar Allen Poe, H.P. Lovecraft, Stephen King, and Clive Barker never stopped hunting the common weak point. And i can’t stop asking this question. “Why is horror the way it is?”(thepsychologist) “Fresh from a study visit to the Center for Evolutionary Psychology at the University of California, Santa Barbara”(thepsychologist) claims that its is possible to use horror fiction to see the lack of historical and cultural variance as an indication that there is such a thing as human nature. For some people getting scared is an experience because they think that they will create strategies to each monster that they are going to face with. Like Onur stated some people believe there are zombies and some people have zombieproof houses. For some people, like me, its nothing more than a gag. Lastly, i recommend you guys to watch FPSRussia to survive in zombie apocalypse and to see weapons. Check this picture out http://actionbash.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Zombie-Proof-House.png
